Historical Development:

  • 1868 - The Detroit Medical College, forerunner of the School of Medicine, was established.
  • 1933 - Colleges and schools were united into a single institution under the control of the Detroit Board of Education.
  • 1959 - Wayne State University became a constitutionally established university by popularly adopted amendment to the Michigan Constitution.

Campus Highlights:

  • Wayne State University is Michigan's only urban research university.
  • Eleven schools and colleges offer more than 350 major subject areas to our 33,137 graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Main campus encompasses 203 acres containing 100 education and research buildings. Six extension centers are in the metropolitan area and Port Huron.

Student Profile:

  • Fall 2005 Enrollment - 33,137 students.
  • Approximately 80 percent of our students are from the tri-county area, and nearly 11 percent are from outside of the United States.
  • Third largest international enrollment in Michigan with 2,783 and 750 visiting scholars from almost 100 countries.

Faculty Profile:

  • As of fall 2005, the faculty numbered 2,764.

Alumni Profile:

  • Wayne State University has more than 220,000 living alumni in the United States and worldwide. Seventy-five percent live and work in Michigan.

Contributions to Community:

  • Wayne State provided a net economic benefit of more than $1 billion to a seven-county area composed of Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties, according to findings of a recently published report by the Anderson Economic Group (AEG).
