Wayne State University is proud of its reputation for academic and research programs that rank among the nation's best. And, although our research extends worldwide, 75 percent of our nearly 220,000 alumni live and work in Michigan. The daily life of this entire state would be very different without the positive influence of Wayne State.

Wayne First: The Campaign for Wayne State University, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the university's 140-year history, is providing myriad opportunities to build on Wayne State's distinctive strengths and then to reach beyond them into new areas of leadership, scholarship and service.

While we focus on becoming the model, urban public university for the 21st century, we also are keenly aware that a great university is intrinsically about people -- exceptional students, accomplished faculty, dedicated alumni, and a community of loyal friends and supporters. People are the university's most valuable resource and the wellspring of our strength and character. Thanks to the generosity of those who believe in the mission of the university, we have exceeded the campaign's $500 million goal by more than $378 million!

There are many reasons to be thankful and to celebrate our achievements; however, Wayne First is not over. There remains much to accomplish. Gifts from alumni and friends like you will bolster the university's efforts to:

• Strengthen undergraduate, graduate and professional programs
